Moment of Truth

And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”   Luke 12:16-21 (ESV)

It seems as if Jesus is describing the American Dream. Many work and get paid more than they need, and store it away in hopes of one day being able to do whatever they want and to answer to no one.

Yet God, in this case, calls the one who does this a fool. Perhaps one is called foolish because of the narrowness of his focus, or because he trusted his wealth, or because his excess was used for his own self-indulgence. Whatever the reason, he is a fool because God calls him one.

Many workers in the United States make more than they need. One day, we will all stand before God and find out what He saw when He looked at us. Will we be wise or foolish? That moment will be a moment of truth.
