“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
Luke 12:49-53 (ESV) Truth does stir up that to which it is opposed. Truth cannot coexist with lies. Those who lie, must resort to anger, manipulation, and even politics to suppress the truth that would destroy their lie. Those who live in the truth can be patient and give a soft answer, for in time, their way will prevail. Jesus is not saying that He is thrilled that His coming causes division. Rather, He is stating a fact, that truth and evil cannot peacefully coexist. Since He is truth, He cannot peacefully coexist with those who lie. Real peacemakers seek the truth, not human consensus, for unity can only be found when everyone aligns with the truth. |
