As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:27-28 (ESV) A woman in the crowd conveyed a common idea that blessings come from factors that lie outside of our control, yet Jesus corrected her thinking by telling her that being blessed is something available to all. Those who know God and obey God will be blessed by God. All people, regardless of their status, can be blessed because they can choose to know and obey God. God is the great equalizer. All can be a member of His family because all gain entrance into His family the same way, through Jesus Christ. All can be successful because all can know Him and make Him known. All can face a certain and secure eternity because all can trust and obey. There is no privileged class of people who earn God’s favor, just those who thoroughly enjoy His mercy and grace, and therefore live as privileged people. |
